What causes acne?
Acne occurs when one or more of the following factors are present in our skin:
- Excess oil production
- Excess dead skin cells
- Bacteria
- Excess activity of androgens
What are the different types of acne?
Whiteheads: A plugged sebaceous gland that is not inflamed.
Blackhead: An open plugged pore that appears dark.
Pustules: The most common, red pimple.
Papules: A pimple with a white center.
Cysts: Cysts reside deep under the skin; they are often inflamed and painful. They can easily cause scarring, so this condition should be addressed immediately.
Nodules: A severe form of acne, these also reside deep in the skin, and hardened. The blemish can remain beneath the skin surface for weeks or months. This type of acne also causes scarring and should be treated.
